By now, everyone has probably already heard the advice to finish holiday shopping early to avoid the product shortages which are the predicted result of continuing supply chain disruptions. An even better idea is to buy art for holiday gifts, thereby supporting your artist friends and neighbors, and the local economy as well. The NEMAA shop is a great place to start (https://nemaa.org/shop/) for unique and one of a kind gifts.
I've been keeping my all prima skills sharp the past few years by working on small (6" x 6" or 6" x 8") pet portraits from photos. Some have been commissions, some have been done because I just liked the animal, and many have been given by me as gifts. The recipients are always thrilled to have them. A few are available on my site in the NEMAA Shop and I have posted examples on my website and Instagram. I would love to do more of these as holiday gifts, but here's the thing: these are original oil paintings and, while they are small and done quickly, they still take 3-6 weeks to dry before they can be varnished. So if you would like to gift a pet portrait, please get in touch soon. I would also be happy to create a gift certificate if you would prefer that the recipient work directly with me to capture the spirit of their pet. Recharged from my long-awaited trips outside of Minnesota last month, I am currently taking an online self-portrait workshop through Grand Central Atelier with the wonderful instructor, Patrick Byrnes, and trying to do as many small gouache plein aire studies as possible while the weather is still warm and beautiful. I am also formulating ideas for a project in 2022 to organize a number of paintings around writing that I have found inspirational, thought-provoking, or at least interesting during the pandemic times. More details on that in the future.
